In a mere 45 seconds on Jan. 12, 2010, the world watched as the nation of Haiti was brought to its knees by a devastating 7.0-magnitude earthquake. Immediately, more than three million people needed assistance, thousands of children were orphaned, and families were torn apart. A city of millions was left in shambles.
Having lost everything, and with nowhere to go but ever-growing "tent cities," the Haitian people who survived now begin to rebuild -- and the Haitian church is responding, showing people the hope and encouragement that can only be found in Jesus Christ.
You have a chance to participate in the physical and spiritual rebirth of a nation. As a member of an Adventures in Missions team, you will assist Haitian churches and locally-led ministries in providing relief to the people. With the powerful combination of the hope of Christ and humanitarian aid, you can be a part of the change Haiti needs.
Pray for these things as you prepare to serve:
That God would continue revealing himself to the Haitian people in the wake of this disaster.
For peace and tolerance in the midst of pain and chaos.
That God will give you and other team members opportunities to share the Gospel as you serve the people of Haiti.
In an effort to prepare you for Haiti, we have outlined a number of things on the Haiti Field Guide.
Opportunity for you and your family to be challenged as you assist Haitians in need.
Is It Safe To Go?
When traveling to hard places such as Haiti there are inherent risks involved.
There is risk due to lack of sanitary conditions, due to crumbling infrastructure, and due to security concerns.
We must constantly assess the situation and work to mitigate these risks and provide an environment that is as safe and secure as possible for our teams within the context of situation.
We have not had security issues in Haiti thus far, however the situation there is fluid and we must continue to be both prayerful and vigilant.
