FAVORITE STORY

I took a team of high schoolers into an impoverished area to help a man from a local church in Puerto Rico. He had just lost his very elderly and sick mom that he had cared for for many years and was struggling now being on his own. Our job was to come in and help clean the place up to a level that was maintainable and not so overwhelming. But the team connected with the gentleman immediately despite the language barrier. Through a translator, we were able to hear his stories, share some of our stories of love and hope in Christ with him, and pray with him. For some members of the team, simply cleaning was not enough. While a handful of us finished the job, a few of the team ran to the store and replaced many broken or missing items: dishes, cups, bedding, pillows, a shower caddy, towels, a new camp stove, a couple pots & pans, cleaning supplies, and more. The man was overcome and so grateful. “I knew before that God was real and that he saw me,” he said, “but today, He knows me. I know that I’m not really alone.”
