I felt God call me to pray for a single mother and on the second day. I saw a mother walking in a store with her kid and felt God call me towards her. I was able to pray with her and her kid and while I was praying I felt God tell me to pay for her groceries!

The Appalachian Mountains are renowned worldwide for their stunning natural beauty. With steep wooded hills, narrow valleys, and winding streams, they are truly a natural wonder. Despite this beauty, the people of Appalachia face significant challenges, struggling daily with poverty and its many effects.

Endowed with abundant natural resources, these communities still fight against economic hardships. Many residents live below the national poverty line, contending with issues such as drug and alcohol addiction, poor health, and limited educational opportunities. These struggles have contributed to a “culture of poverty,” leading to joblessness and distressed communities.

The Appalachian people come from a proud heritage of hard work and resilience. However, years of economic and social difficulties have taken a toll. Many individuals work multiple jobs and rely on government aid to make ends meet.

What these communities need most is hope—hope for a better future and the assurance that change is possible. By coming together, we can help bring that hope to life, supporting the people of Appalachia in their journey towards a brighter tomorrow.

Service Opportunities

Your group mission trip will have several community engagement opportunities in Duffield, VA! Here’s a glimpse of how you can make a positive impact:

  • Elderly Care: Mostly helping with home repairs, cleaning, or projects around their houses. You could also visit a senior center where you will be able to play games, sing songs, or simply just have a conversation with some elderly people.
  • Recovery Program Ministry: Specializing in recovery programs for youth, families, and adults, one of our partners helps those recovering from alcohol or substance abuse learn to live their lives drug-free and alcohol free. They provide free programs and services through education, training, counseling and mentoring, to combat addictions. Your teams will have the opportunity to work at the youth center, thrift store and apartment complex. This could entail fellowshipping, sidewalk VBS, distributing clothes, landscaping, light construction, and prayer walks.
  • Homeless Ministry: There are several homeless shelters for men, women, and children who may be impoverished economically, educationally, emotionally and/or spiritually. Here, your team might do light construction, cleaning, organizing, or landscaping. This is also a great place to fellowship and share your faith.
  • Thrift Store: Here your team might help by sorting clothes that are donated as well as furniture and merchandise. Cleaning, organizing, helping customers, and fellowshipping with each other and the people all around there.
  • VBS: You could have the opportunity to facilitate some kids camps or programs for the local community children.
Living Arrangements

Welcome to your stay in Duffield, VA! You’ll be lodging in cozy cabins nestled in a scenic location. Each of the 4 cabins has 10 bunk beds, perfect for a comfortable group experience.

There’s a spacious bathhouse with separate areas for men and women, complete with washers and dryers. While the cabins themselves don’t have electricity, you’ll have access to electricity and Wi-Fi at the church nearby. Enjoy your stay!

Transportation

Most of our teams prefer to drive vans or a bus, which also serves as transportation throughout the week.

Also, please note that air fare is not included in our costs, so you’ll need to consider that in your planning.

Cooking

We have a full kitchen equipped with anything you might need. Preparing meals is a team effort, and we have a blast doing it together! Everyone will get a chance to help with meal prep and serving.

For breakfast, you’ll enjoy options like cold cereal, fruit, and bagels. If your group is up for it, we can also whip up some hot breakfasts.

Lunches will be packed with sandwiches, fruit, and a side to take along to the ministry site. After a day of serving, we’ll come together for a hot dinner, either at the church or during ministry events. Let’s make mealtime both delicious and fun!

Safety

Your safety is our top priority! We’ve got an internal Risk Management team and external consultants working together to ensure a safe experience. Our multi-pronged approach includes monitoring information from reporting agencies and leveraging the expertise of our ministry partners.

We have clear protocols in place, like ensuring students are always with an adult. Plus, our ministry hosts will share specific safety guidelines tailored to your trip location. Our Project Leaders are trained in risk management and have access to both on-field and home-office support, ensuring you’re in good hands throughout your journey.

Registration and Payment

$500 Deposit: To reserve your trip, a $500 deposit is required. This deposit locks in your spot, and we’ll stay in touch to help you with all the preparations. The best part? This deposit goes toward the total cost of your trip.

50% Payment: Three months before your trip, half of the total cost will need to be paid.

100% Payment: The remaining balance is due two months before your trip.

We’re here to make the process as smooth and enjoyable as possible!

Meet Your Project Leader

We’re excited to introduce you to your dedicated Project Leader! An experienced adult leader will be assigned to your team for the entire trip, staying with you and engaging in daily activities and ministry. With strong missions and leadership experience, along with a proven ability in youth and young adult discipleship, your Project Leader is there to support and guide you.

They’ll help facilitate ministry efforts, assist with meal preparations, and lead daily debriefs and devotionals. You’ll also have the chance to connect with your Project Leader in the weeks leading up to your trip, ensuring you’re well-prepared and excited for the journey ahead!

We’re excited to offer group trips that can be tailored to 5 or 7-day options. Here’s a sneak peek into a fulfilling 7-day adventure in Appalachia:

Saturday: Arrival and settling into your cozy cabins in Duffield, VA. Get ready for an amazing week ahead!

Sunday: Dive into light construction projects, helping with repairs and improvements in the community.

Monday: Spend the day at our vibrant thrift store, sorting donations, organizing merchandise, and connecting with the locals.

Tuesday: Enjoy a heartwarming day of elderly care, visiting senior centers, playing games, singing songs, and sharing conversations.
