Community Overview

Zuni Pueblo is a place of order, regularity, and tradition nestled into the border between New Mexico and Arizona. The residents are agricultural people whose lives revolve around their religious beliefs. The cycle of religious ceremonies takes precedence over all other activities. The Zuni people believe that everything shares a common spirit, being interconnected. During religious festivals, song and dance accompanies masked performances by tribal leaders, while the shamans pray to the gods for favors ranging from fertile soil to abundant amounts of rain. The shamans play an important role in the community as they are looked upon for guidance as well as knowledge and healing.

In Zuni Pueblo, traditional religion is still practiced, and ceremonies remain an integral part of life. Although the people have a rich cultural heritage, the Pueblo struggle to live as a healthy community. Alcoholism, diabetes, broken families, and limited economic opportunity plague the people. A growing number of Zuni Christians are convinced the Gospel message provides answers and offers life-giving hope.

Although some Native leaders are opposed to the spread of Christianity among their people, our ministry partners reach out to the community by leading teen youth groups once, discipleship camps, and youth camps. These ministry opportunities offer an opportunity for visiting teams to connect, disciple and build relationships with local teens and our ministry partners.

Top 3 Most Common Mission Trip Questions

Activities and Opportunities
  • Work Service Projects: The spring and fall missions designed to support Broken Arrow summer camps will be largely work/service oriented, although you’ll get time with Native young people. Expect anything from trail clearing to construction. The final work plan will be developed 6-8 weeks ahead of arrival, based on team skills and talents and camp project needs.
  • Community Outreach: Mission participants may meet people from nearby Navajo and Mescalero Apache communities, the Hispanic communities in Gallup, and the Zuni Pueblo. Or students from many Native communities at the Ft. Wingate School evening outreach.
  • Ford Canyon Park: has proven time and again to be a fertile evangelistic ground. And it’s also a place where an impromptu VBS could spring up. Just bring a few games for young kids 6-10 yrs. and be prepared to share the Gospel in story form. Just remember the attention span of your audience-the stories must be short. And allow break times in smaller groups for the kids to ask questions.
  • Family Relationships: One of the most significant, effective ministries available is often overlooked by visiting teams—encouraging and pouring love into the staff of Broken Arrow. Several families live year-round at the ranch or nearby. While their Christian community is no doubt very supportive, we can remind these missionaries that they are not alone. People do see their sacrifice, and appreciate them and the way the Lord is using them. We will rely on you to brainstorm (in advance) events and/or activities that will remind the staff that our Father sees them and loves them.
  • Camp support: for one of the eight, summer weeks when the campers, Native kids from all around the region, gather to enjoy this amazing place and hear their life-giving message! Please inquire!
Lodging

In this location, lodging ranges from bunk beds in dorm style rooms to sleeping on a church floor, depending on the available opportunities.

Meals

There is a full kitchen with anything you might need. Meals are very much a team effort, and we have a lot of fun in the process! Teams will participate in meal prep and serving. Breakfast will be cold cereal, fruit, bagels, etc. Hot breakfasts could be available as well, depending on the group’s willingness to contribute to the meal prep and cooking. Lunch will be packed sandwiches, fruit and a side to take to the ministry site. Hot dinners will typically be served after ministry at the church each day or alongside the ministry events.

Travel and Transportation

If you plan to fly, Albuquerque’s airport (ABQ) is small and a delight. You’ll need to reserve vehicles (in advance) at their Rental Center, then drive 140 miles west on Interstate 40 to Gallup, NM. Throughout the week, teams will use their own vehicles for transportation.

Health and Safety

The safety of our participants is a top priority for us. We have both an internal Risk Management team and external Risk Management consultants. We use a multi-pronged approach to risk management – including monitoring information from reporting agencies and relying on the knowledge of our ministry partners. In addition to our own protocols (e.g., students must be with an adult at all times), our ministry hosts and partners will provide trip specific safety guidelines for the particular trip location. Our Project Leaders are trained in risk management and have access to both on-field and home-office support.

In most cases, your project leader will help with facilitating ministry, meals and daily debrief and devotional time. Your Project Leader will be assigned to your trip and you’ll have the opportunity to have conversations with them during the weeks leading up to your trip.
