Community Overview

From the 200 foot cliffs of Cabo Rojo to the ancient streets of San Juan – Puerto Rico is known to be a wonderful tourist destination and to have a relaxed Caribbean culture. However, life on this island is not what you see in the travel magazines.

Nearly half of the population in this beautiful island lives below the poverty line and struggle to find jobs. In 2017, Hurricane Maria devastated the nation – the power grid for the entire island was destroyed, leaving 3.4 million U.S. citizens in the dark. About 6% of the population fled Puerto Rico as a result of Maria, that’s over 200,00 people.

This tragedy left Puerto Ricans frightened, confused, and hopeless. As they continue to recover, will you share the hope of Jesus in Puerto Rico?

Activities and Opportunities

Your team will partner with a local church that’s dedicated to bringing the love of Jesus to their community. Here are just a few of the things you’ll get the opportunity to do in Puerto Rico:

  • Work Projects: Hurricane Maria left thousands of families without homes. Help with small construction projects on homes affected by Hurricane Maria and minister to those who are still recovering.
  • Community Outreach: Visit the homes of those affected by Maria and hear their story. Pray with them, encourage them and share a meal with them.
  • Children’s Ministry: You will have the opportunity to serve families in the community through Vacation Bible School. Your team will work with a local church to plan songs, games, crafts, and Bible lessons for children in the barrio near your host ministry.
  • Prayer Walks: Serve alongside a local church and reach out to their community with them. Discover the power of prayer and learn more about God’s heart as you pray for the u0147barriou0148 as you walk.

Lodging

Your team will stay at one of our partners’ churches where you will have access to bathrooms and showers. Bedding will either be on the church floor (bring a mat and sleeping bag) or in a bunkhouse (bring a sleeping bag).

Food

The food will depend on the location. One church will have a Catering company prepare the breakfast and the dinner. Then the teams will prepare their lunch with PB and Jelly, and ham and cheese sandwiches. Other host churches will have one or two ladies prepare breakfast and dinner. Break will usually be cereal, eggs, fruits, juice and coffee. Dinners will usually be rice and beans with chicken, spaghetti, salads, vegetables, pasta, pizza and other typical Puertorrican foods.

Transportation

Your team will fly into San Juan and drive to the ministry site from there. All ground transportation will need to be arranged based on your team’s needs and is in addition to this trip cost. As a reference point, in 2022 a 15 passenger van cost about $1,600 and a 7 passenger van cost about $800. We can connect you with our preferred rental company.

Health and Safety

The safety of our participants is a top priority for us. We have both an internal Risk Management team and external Risk Management consultants. We use a multi-pronged approach to risk management – including monitoring information from reporting agencies and relying on the knowledge of our ministry partners. In addition to our own protocols (e.g., students must be with an adult at all times), our ministry hosts and partners will provide trip specific safety guidelines for the particular trip location. Our Project Leaders are trained in risk management and have access to both on-field and home-office support.

Registration and Payment

$500 Deposit: This deposit is required to reserve your trip. At this point, you will lock in your trip and we will keep in touch with you going forward about preparation. This deposit is applied to the total cost of your trip.

50% Payment: Half of your total trip cost will need to be paid 2 months before your trip.

100% Payment: The remaining balance is due 1 month before your trip.
