Group Missions to Chicago, Illinois

During our trip, we encountered several unhoused individuals sheltering under the overhang of a muffler shop and we felt compelled to stop and pray for them. One man we met had a significant leg wound that was rendering him unable to stand. The following day, we returned to visit him, and to our amazement, he was up and walking around! Witnessing this physical healing was a first-time experience for many of us. It left the team feeling encouraged and empowered to pray with authority and expectation, knowing that God is still at work in miraculous ways today.

Since 1989 we’ve been mobilizing the church to engage with Jesus and join His work at home and abroad. We’ll connect you with these opportunities while taking the hassle and guess work out of planning your trip to Chicago, Illinois.

Mission Trip Details

Meet the People of Chicago

Chicago is a world-class city that feels like home and exudes classic, Midwestern friendliness. In this town, your neighborhood defines you in a city that is very proud of its community.

Chicago is very cosmopolitan with people of all backgrounds and walks of life. Our ministry hosts have established deep roots of friendships with the residents in the areas where you will serve. You will be able to build off this foundation of trust and build your own relationships with locals.

Chicago has both a grit and a unique passion. Will you come, join the community, and share the love of Jesus in this historic city?

Service Opportunities

You will partner with a local church to share the hope and love of Jesus in a real and relevant way through a variety of ministry opportunities.

Here are some things you might be doing in Chicago:

Children’s Ministry: Serve with a daycare program, build relationships, play games, and possibly accompany them on field trips to the zoo, museum, and other fun locations.
Homeless Ministry: Hit the streets to build relationships with the homeless. This could look like bringing snow cones and setting up a game of checkers or sitting and getting to know people. Teams will also have the opportunity to serve in homeless shelters.
Work Projects: This summer, the church is building a playground at a local public school and your team may get to be part of the process.
Refugee Ministry: As a gateway city Chicago has a large population of refugees awaiting confirmation of their official refugee status. You may have the opportunity to work with local churches to provide basic necessities like clothing (most only have what they could carry), showers, laundry, and meals to some of the many refugees in the city.

Living Arrangements

You will stay onsite at the church and will have access to bathrooms and showers. Sleeping arrangements will be on the church floor, so bring your sleeping pad/air mattress and blankets or sleeping bag.

Hotels are also an option, which we will arrange for you. This will come at an additional cost of roughly $25-$35 per person per day depending on the cost at the time. The earlier we can work with our hotel partners the better the chance is that the price will be favorable.

Transportation

Your group is welcome to drive in or fly in. Chicago is home to a major airport with rental options as well. Parking is available on site. Bringing vans is highly recommended. Groups will be required to supply their own transportation to and from ministry each day.

Cooking

There is a full kitchen with anything you might need. Meals are very much a team effort, and we have a lot of fun in the process! Teams will participate in meal prep and serving. Breakfast will be cold cereal, fruit, bagels, etc. Hot breakfasts could be available as well, depending on the group’s willingness to contribute to the meal prep and cooking. Lunch will be packed sandwiches, fruit and a side to take to the ministry site. Hot dinners will typically be served after ministry at the church each day.

Safety

The safety of our participants is a top priority for us. We have both an internal Risk Management team and external Risk Management consultants. We use a multi-pronged approach to risk management – including monitoring information from reporting agencies and relying on the knowledge of our ministry partners. In addition to our own protocols (e.g., students must be with an adult at all times), our ministry hosts and partners will provide trip specific safety guidelines for the particular trip location. Our Project Leaders are trained in risk management and have access to both on-field and home-office support.

Registration and Payment

$500 Deposit: To reserve your trip, a $500 deposit is required. This deposit locks in your spot, and we’ll stay in touch to help you with all the preparations. The best part? This deposit goes toward the total cost of your trip.

50% Payment: Three months before your trip, half of the total cost will need to be paid.

100% Payment: The remaining balance is due two months before your trip.

Meet Your Project Leader

An adult Project Leader will be assigned to your team throughout the duration of your trip. They will stay with you and your team, as well as engage daily with you throughout ministry and daily life activities. This leader will have strong missions experience, leadership experience and a demonstrated competence in the area of discipleship of youth and young adults. In most cases, your project leader will help with facilitating ministry, meals and daily debrief and devotional time. Your Project Leader will be assigned to your trip and you’ll have the opportunity to have conversations with them during the weeks leading up to your trip.
