Community Overview

Hurricane Ida has ravaged New Orleans and the surrounding areas. Many towns are flooded, people were left trapped in their homes and roads turned into rivers! We have been working in New Orleans since Katrina hit, when we sent 4,000 people there in one year. Our ministry partners are evaluating how to move forward. Some of their churches and homes were severely damaged. It will take a long while to recover. With your help, it won’t be as difficult. Join us in New Orleans!

Activities and Opportunities

In the summer of 2006, Adventures brought in student teams who ‘gutted’ a lot of houses, the first step in rebuilding in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. The hurricane laid waste to much of New Orleans, claiming over 1,500 lives in Louisiana alone. During the recovery time, we began to focus our efforts with our ministry partners in an area called Holly Grove. This ministry reached displaced families, with an emphasis on the young people in the community.

Now, after 15 years, our partners are being hit again by a devastating hurricane. Ida wiped out homes, businesses, churches, flooded towns and turned roads into rivers.

Your team will have the opportunity to again help these communities find their footing as they reclaim their lives, their dignity and their hope.

Be prepared for anything on this trip! Ministry could take any number of forms, including:

  • Mucking houses and doing light construction
  • Hosting a VBS (Vacation Bible School) for the kids in the community
Listening to people’s stories and praying for them
  • Serving a community cookout
  • And many other possibilities!

We are still learning about how we can best help. We know the church must respond and our friends in New Orleans will be ready to receive you.

Lodging

Lodging is on the church floor in one of several large classrooms, so your team will need to bring their own bedding. There is a men’s bathroom and a women’s bathroom on the upstairs floor, with two toilets and sinks each. Downstairs in the church there are two bathrooms, each with a toilet, and the men’s has a shower.

The Fellowship Hall, a separate building, is the team’s main gathering and eating area. This space has a men’s and women’s bathroom with showers. The lodging site also has a big, adjacent green space for team building activities and block parties!

Hotel rooms nearby are an option and we would be glad to arrange that for you if you prefer.

Food

There is a fully equipped kitchen with a lot of refrigerator, freezer, and pantry space. Meals are very much a team effort, and we have a lot of fun in the process! Teams will participate in meal prep and serving. Breakfast will be cold cereal, fruit, bagels, etc. Hot breakfasts could be available as well, depending on the group’s willingness to contribute to the meal prep and cooking. Lunch will be packed sandwiches, fruit and a side to take to the ministry site. Hot dinners will typically be prepared by a cook and served by the team after ministry at the church each day.

Transportation

Your group is welcome to drive in or fly in. New Orleans is home to a major airport with rental options as well. Parking is available on site. Bringing vans or multiple vehicles. Groups will be required to supply their own transportation to and from ministry each day, often in several different locations at the same time!

Health and Safety

The safety of our participants is a top priority for us. We have both an internal Risk Management team and external Risk Management consultants. We use a multi-pronged approach to risk management – including monitoring information from reporting agencies and relying on the knowledge of our ministry partners. In addition to our own protocols (e.g., students must be with an adult at all times), our ministry hosts and partners will provide trip specific safety guidelines for the particular trip location. Our Project Leaders are trained in risk management and have access to both on-field and home-office support.
