Oh, the sweltering combination of heat & humidity of the summer! Somehow
the rise in temperature slows us down, doesn’t it?
Yet it’s nearly August and office supply stores are already
running “back-to-school” ad campaigns.
Alas, time is not deterred by the steaminess of this season.
Some of us are starting college as a freshman and will be
moving into our dorm rooms in a couple weeks.
Some of us are returning to campus for another semester, or perhaps for
our senior (super-senior?) year of college.
Some of us have been out of high school for a decade now. Or
you’ve been out of college for so long that your kids are getting ready for
college.
Like Gary, for example, who says to his college self,
“Remember when you saw your friends
getting ready to go and travel, and you didn’t go ’cause you were afraid? You still look back — this day — and wonder
what it would’ve been like had you gone.”
William Bostwick won’t have to wonder; he’ll remember so
many things from this summer in
Kenya, like this:
Since revealing to me the
importance of claiming God’s favor over my life, the Holy Spirit has been
showing me the freedom that comes from that. I am no longer afraid that I am
unworthy of God’s goodness… it was for freedom that Christ set us free, and
where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom! Freedom from all things,
including fear!
And
Melanie Wells will remember her summer in
Nicaragua because that’s when she celebrated her “new birthday”.
Brent Hamilton won’t forget how God multiplied food on a boat on the Amazon, in Peru.
If you’ve been an alumnus* longer than you’ve been a
student, would you mind sharing this post with your collegiate friends?
* You haven’t missed the boat entirely! If you’re between the ages of 21-35, check out this opportunity serve as a missionary to 11 countries in 11 months. if you can only spare 1-2 weeks, check out these opportunities to places like Swaziland, Japan and Haiti.
