I was chasing the American dream…I had the six-figure income and the corner office. I had the beautiful house in the exclusive part of town. And I remember coming home from Mexico and staring out my office window and saying, “Is this it? Is this all there is?'” -Rick Smith, an executive at a pharmaceutical company whose life was radically changed on a mission trip. (Read more…)
Let’s face it: we’re going to spend a third of our lives working in some capacity or another. So, do you want a job or a calling? Do you want to slave away at a list of tasks with nothing to show for it but a paycheck, or you want to give that third of your life to the pursuit of something greater?
What is a job?
- A job is something that has to be done, a task or project that has to be completed; an occupation.
- A job is a post of employment, a full-time or part-time position that provides for your living expenses.
- A job is anything that a person is expected or obligated to do; a duty or responsibility.
What is a calling?
- A calling is an inner impulse toward a particular course of action, especially when accompanied by a strong conviction; a vocation.
- A calling is a summons, invitation, or bidding.
- A calling is a drive to fulfill a particular purpose.
While there is certainly nothing wrong with working hard to provide for your family and live responsibly, many of us compromise our callings for jobs.
Why do we do this? Because a calling isn’t safe. It isn’t predictable. And it isn’t necessarily going to guarantee a solid paycheck every other Friday.
But a calling can satisfy the longings of your soul like no job can. And if it is truly from God, a calling will provide for you in amazing and exciting ways. Pursuing a calling will one of the greatest adventures of your life.
What is your calling? Are you pursuing it? Is God calling you out of your comfort zone to something more? Consider one of the following missions experience that challenge participants to set aside the greater part of a year to focus on their identity and role in God’s kingdom:
