You’ve said yes to going, but before you pack your bag, there’s deeper preparation to do.
Mission trips are powerful. They stretch us, challenge us, and invite us into something far bigger than ourselves. But to fully receive what God wants to do through you and in you, it’s important to prepare more than just your logistics.
You need to prepare your heart. You need to prepare your mind.

Here’s how to begin.
1. Start with Surrender
The most fruitful mission trips don’t begin at the airport; they begin in the quiet place with God. Ask Him to search your heart. Invite Him to expose expectations, fears, pride, or assumptions you may be carrying.
Mission work isn’t about being the hero. It’s about joining what God is already doing.
Pray:
“Lord, I lay down my plans and my comfort. Prepare me to listen, to learn, and to love well.”

2. Be Willing to Unlearn
Every culture has its own rhythms, values, and ways of communicating. Your job on the field isn’t to fix or critique – it’s to observe, honor, and serve with humility.
Prepare your mind to embrace discomfort.
Tip: Read up on the region you’re going to. Practice listening more than speaking.
3. Pack Light: Spiritually and Emotionally
Carrying unresolved stress, bitterness, or anxiety into a mission trip will weigh you down. If you’re overwhelmed before you leave, take time to process, confess, and release those burdens.
Make space for what God wants to give you by letting go of what you don’t need to carry.
4. Commit to Team Unity
One of the most overlooked aspects of trip preparation is how you show up as a teammate. Unity doesn’t happen by accident.
Decide now that you’ll be quick to listen, quick to forgive, and quick to encourage. God often does as much in your team relationships as He does in your outreach.
5. Ask God to Give You His Eyes
Ultimately, this journey isn’t about what you’ll >do; it’s about how you’ll see. Ask God to help you see people as He sees them. Not as problems to solve, but as individuals to love. Not as numbers, but as names.
And be prepared, He may show you something new about yourself too.
