On our first night of ministry, Drea and I were riding in the front seat alongside Pastor Ronnie, one of our hosts here at Shofar Ministries, and talking about how much we loved Guatemala. Suddenly, Pastor Ronnie became silent. After a moment, he said in his broken English, "I do not want Guatemala. I want Guatebuena."
GUATEBUENA! YEAHHHHHHHHH! I can think of no better way to sum up the heart of the movement that we are a part of in Puerto Barrios. Already we have started to see walls being broken down and bridges being built across cultures and relationships. As our expectations quickly continue to dwindle, the life that our team is experiencing outside of our comfort zones (and personal hygiene) is rich and wild, just like this beautiful country. God is tearing us down, piece by piece, to make way for a more whole and beautiful creation. As we trudge through the thick Guatemalan heat, drenched in sweat and dust, we are forced to re-learn our own names and faces. We are forced to trust that the voice of God will find us—and define us—amidst the overlapping callings of a world that is not our own.
"Come, let us return to the Lord.
He has torn us to pieces
but he will heal us;
he has injured us
but he will bind up our wounds.
2 After two days he will revive us;
on the third day he will restore us,
that we may live in his presence.
3 Let us acknowledge the Lord;
let us press on to acknowledge him.
As surely as the sun rises,
he will appear;
he will come to us like the winter rains,
like the spring rains that water the earth."
(Hosea 6:1–3)
