“Since my first trip to Carrefour in July, the joy of the people has been slightly muted. Many people still live within a tent community; they want a home. Still, despite the trash and rubble
intertwined with the cityscape in Port-au-Prince and Carrefour from the
devastating Jan. 12 earthquake, there is a joyful, lively pulse
emanating from the Haitian people. Before I left for my second trip to Haiti, co-workers and friends
questioned my motives. What about cholera, they would ask me. But I knew
where we were going, and I knew AIM would not send teams there if there
was no access to clean water. There are several reasons not to go to
Haiti, but you only need one reason to go, to serve the people. Do not
let the circumstances deceive you. Haiti is a beautiful place filled
with welcoming people who do not want to be forgotten.”
