Why We Go: Stories of Healing and Hope from Beauty for Ashes

There’s a moment on every Beauty for Ashes trip when time seems to stand still. It’s usually quiet. Sometimes it comes with tears. Sometimes laughter. Sometimes just a deep exhale. It’s the moment when a woman realizes she’s not alone. When the lie that her story is too broken, or too ordinary, gets shattered by truth and love.

These are the moments we carry home. These are the stories that keep us going back.

Presence That Changes Everything

In Costa Rica, we stepped into the home of a single mother recovering from surgery. She had five children and little support. While she healed, her 17-year-old son Jeffrey had stepped into the role of caretaker, sacrificing school to care for his siblings in a neighborhood controlled by the drug cartel.

He carried the weight of the world on his shoulders. We sat with them. Listened. Prayed. Encouraged. We couldn’t fix everything, but we showed up with the compassion of Christ. And in that living room, hope cracked through the heaviness.

This is why we go. Because a mother in crisis deserves to be reminded that she’s not forgotten. Because a teenage boy like Jeffrey deserves to know his sacrifice is seen. Because the presence of Jesus, through people who are willing, still changes everything.

The Places You’d Never Expect

Northeast Georgia is known for its beauty, rolling hills, sleepy towns, and southern charm. But beneath the surface, we’ve discovered stories of trafficking, addiction, and deep grief.

In Gainesville, we’ve partnered with recovery centers and ministries supporting survivors. And every time we sit in a circle with these women, every time someone braves vulnerability and tells the truth about where they’ve been, something holy happens.

Walls fall. Hearts soften. Lies lose their power. And the truth sets women free.

God is working in the places most people overlook. Sometimes all it takes is someone who’s willing to listen.

It Starts with One Yes

In New Mexico, a small team of young women knocked on a door to invite a neighbor to a VBS program. It seemed simple. Unremarkable. But the woman who answered had never heard the Gospel before. And within thirty minutes of that knock, she gave her life to Jesus.

The team was stunned. “I’ll never forget it,” one woman said. “It changed me forever.”

That’s what happens on these trips. God moves in ways we couldn’t plan if we tried. And often, the lives that are transformed the most… are our own.

So, Why Do We Go?

Because healing is real.
Because presence is powerful.
Because God is still in the business of restoration.

And because when women gather in honesty and love – across borders, languages, and life experiences – the Kingdom breaks in.
