Why Long-Term Missions Matter: Building Roots for Lasting Impact

There’s a difference between visiting and staying.

At Adventures in Missions, we’ve learned that one of the most powerful ways to bring lasting change is to be present, not just for a week, but for the long haul. That’s why we’ve invested in establishing long-term mission bases around the world.

Our international bases are more than launching pads for World Race or STM teams. They are hubs of hope, places where deep relationships are built, local leaders are empowered, and long-term sustainability becomes reality.

When we choose to stay, everything changes.

The Power of Presence

The gospel is best shared through presence. It’s lived out in daily conversations, shared meals, and years of walking alongside people in their real, everyday challenges.

Our long-term missionaries don’t simply arrive, preach, and leave. They immerse themselves in the culture. They listen. They learn. They stay long enough to understand what thriving looks like in that specific context, and how to walk with others toward it.

From farming initiatives in Eswatini to church planting support in South Asia, our bases are rooted in relationship. And from that foundation, hope grows.

Why Our Bases Matter

Each of our international bases supports four key areas of ministry:

  1. Hosting short-term teams (World Race + STM)
Our bases provide consistency and structure for visiting teams, allowing Racers and short-term missionaries to plug into long-standing community relationships and serve with humility and honor.

  2. Discipling local leaders
Through mentoring, training, and community engagement, we empower local believers to lead the Church in their own communities.

  3. Addressing physical and spiritual needs
Our bases are embedded in communities – responding to needs with food, education, job training, spiritual care, and discipleship.

  4. Sowing into long-term sustainability
Through initiatives like Umdoni Farm in Eswatini, our teams are working toward community-led transformation that will last for generations.

These long-term investments mean that when your team shows up for a week or a month, you’re stepping into an ongoing story. You’re not starting something new, you’re building on something real.

Want to Go Deeper? Intern at a Base

If you’re exploring the possibility of long-term missions or want to spend an extended season overseas, consider applying for an international internship with Adventures in Missions.

Each internship is shaped around the needs of the base and the unique gifts of the person applying. You might teach English, assist with agriculture, lead Bible studies, create media content, or simply help where help is needed.

Internships typically last 2-3 months and are supervised by experienced Adventures staff. In some cases, internships serve as vision trips, giving both you and our team the chance to discern if you’re a good fit for a long-term role.

We’re looking for people who are:

  • Spiritually mature and rooted in Christ
  • Servant-hearted and eager to learn
  • Culturally adaptable and team-oriented
  • Gifted in areas like teaching, storytelling, administration, construction, media, ministry, or cross-cultural support

If you’re ready to step out in faith, we’d love to talk.

Don’t feel called to go? You can still invest in the mission.

When you give to support a base, you’re helping sustain the long-term work of discipleship, community development, and Gospel impact around the world. Every dollar you give goes toward presence that produces transformation.
