Everything

Woofta is about the only word running through my head right now!  Yesterday, my team, the Global Challenge crew, and people from Mi Reto, hosted a camping trip for the children of the church and children of a small village.  We rode up the mountain in the back of a pickup, packing 13 people in the small truck bed.  We arrived at 8 in the morning and played with the children until 10 at night!  We had a great time loving on the children, talking with their parents, and sharing the Gospel.

Some of my teammates and I met a woman named Estella, and she graciously brought us into her home and shared her story with us.  (In addition to sharing her story, she tried to make us how to make tortillas… it was a major fail, but a great time)  She has 12 children, ages 4-40, and she and her husband are the only believers in her family.  Her story, while heartbreaking, is inspiring…

Last summer, Panajachel was heavily hit with rain, and therefore mudslides occurred.  A particular community was completely washed out, and they lost everything.  In order to aid the people, the Guatemalan government relocated the community to a village in the mountains in a rundown area.  Despite the misfortune her family suffered, Estella was happy and joyful.  She considers herself blessed because no one in her family died from the mudslide.  Her happiness and joy in the Lord touched my heart.  She reminded me that all of the material things the world has to offer will only cause suffering, and that true joy can only come from Jesus Christ.

In addition to playing with the children and talking with the adults, teenagers from Mi Reto church performed different skits and songs in hope of impacting the community.  The most touching drama they performed was Lifehouse’s “Everything” skit.  Their presentation was very impactful on the youth of the village.  I’ve included the link to watch the actual video, and I really encourage you to watch it if you haven’t.  It is powerful!

Here are my prayer requests for today: that my group would rest up after a fairly rough night (we slept in tents on very hard ground), that the Lord would soften Joe’s heart, that we would all remain free of illness, and that the Lord would mold each of our hearts to be more like His.

Graciously, Mariah
