From a Gringo in Guatemala

Yesterday morning, our first morning here in Guatemala, I asked God for a verse for our team while we’re here. He gave me Acts 2:42-47.
“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.”
I believe God specifically gave this as a promise for our team. He has already united our team in only a way He can and He will continue to hold us together. God will give us favor with these people. They may not know why they are drawn to us, but God’s light and love is going to shine brightly in this city dominated by darkness. We will be reaping a harvest.

I’m still struggling with wanting to know what the plans are and wanting to go and do; but God is teaching me just to BE Jesus, and the ‘doing’ part will come. Both yesterday and today we have been able to spend hours in prayer, asking God to prepare ourselves and the hearts of those we’re going to meet. Part of that time was spent doing a prayer walk around the neighborhood that our new home, the youth hostel, is in. (Which the hostel is exceedingly better than what we were expecting; still cold showers and no AC but extremely clean with electricity and delicious food.) As we we’re praying and walking around the neighborhood, we came to this makeshift field with a bunch of kids playing futbol. We joined right in and played for a while until Pastor Ronnie, the local pastor we’re working with, gathered everyone up and started sharing the Gospel. Two kids prayed to receive Christ and then we got to pray over the whole group. God reminded me that His good news is not difficult to understand; it only requires child-like faith.

Home for the next 3 months

God is good and even though this next 90 days feels like a long stretch, I know it’s going to fly by. Happy week-iversary, team!
