Our Passport Uganda team flies back to the States today after four amazing months in Lira, Uganda. Team leader Glenn Pickens recalls about a promise made and fulfilled by God – at both the beginning and end of the trip, God would be faithful. This is Glenn's story.
Do you ever just wish God would let you know it will all be okay in the end?
Our whole team prayed for that during a rough patch at the beginning of our time in Uganda. As the team sought the Lord's will for our trip, I specifically asked the Lord where he would have me lead them.
He showed me a vision — our whole team dancing and worshipping under a vast African sun, symbolizing the end of our time in Uganda.
An image of hope amidst the hard times.
An image of the beautiful journey we had embarked on.
An image of the goodness of God and fulfilled promises.
He told me, "It's all going to be okay."
Fast forward about three months.
Our time in Uganda has not always been easy, but then neither is life at home. When we face difficulties, sometimes we forget God has promised to work all things out for our good.
Near the end of our stay in Uganda, our team set off at 3am on what was supposed to be a three-hour drive to Murchison Falls National Park in western Uganda.
About an hour and a half into our drive, I noticed sparks flying out from under the bus. A few minutes later our driver stopped. The team streamed out of the bus, wondering if we'd be able to get back on the road.
As our driver and I clamored under the bus, I noticed the clear sky begin to lighten, and I realized within the hour we would see an amazing African sunrise.
Soon, the sun peeked over the horizon, and my teammate Haddie remembered the vision I had months ago: the image of our team worshipping and dancing under a giant African sun.
I had all but forgotten about the vision God showed me. But God hadn't.
And now he was letting it come to life.
We were reminded of God's goodness, even in the hard times.
We were reminded he would always be with us. And He works all things together for our good.
We spent the rest of the day exploring the African bush, visiting waterfalls in the Nile, spotting elephants, giraffes, and lions, and living what most people dream of when they think of Africa.
It was such a reminder of the goodness of a God who fulfills his promises.
The past few months have sometimes been challenging and exhausting. There were times we wanted to give up.
But God remains true to his promise. He gave me a vision – it would all be okay – and he told me to persevere. And it was worth it.
