In the midst of the darkness, we encountered countless souls battling feelings of unworthiness and hopelessness, ensnared by the enemy’s lies. Yet, each person we met was a beloved child of God, invited to embrace His forgiveness and grace. It was a humbling experience to share God’s love and offer a comforting touch to these precious individuals.

Since 1989 we’ve been mobilizing the church to engage with Jesus and join His work at home and abroad. We’ll connect you with these opportunities while taking the hassle and guess work out of planning your trip to Colombia.

Mission Trip Details

Meet the People of Colombia

From the Andes Mountains to the Caribbean coastline and the Amazon Rainforest, Colombia is one of the most ecologically diverse countries in the world.

Colombia sits at the crossroads of Central and South America, allowing for a widespread diversity of cultures. Currently, there is a large influx of Venezuelan refugees coming through Colombia, putting a strain on its economic resources.

Many in Colombia have been affected by homelessness, drug addiction, or violence from drug trafficking, but God is bringing hope and restoration.

It is also home to unreached tribes, a large student population rapidly rejecting the Gospel, and thousands of children living on the streets.

Your team will serve in Medellin, known as the “City of Eternal Spring” for its temperate weather and host of beautiful native flowers. Nestled in the Andes mountain region of Colombia, Medellin boasts incredible views of Colombia’s lush green landscapes and rugged natural beauty. This trip is best fit for participants 16 years old or older.

Service Opportunities

Our partners at City of Refuge, have a variety of ministry programs in which you’ll be able to engage. City of Refuge’s vision is to provide a refuge for those in need through the provision of humanitarian aid and holistic programing. Through feeding, housing, recovery, education, and work-readiness programming we help provide both short and long term assistance for those interested in restoring their lives and creating lasting change for their futures.

Men and Women’s Recovery Programs: Serve women coming out of homelessness, addiction, and prostitution through a one-year Christ-centered restoration program. Through daily Bible classes, counseling, and life skills training, City of Refuge seeks to give men and women an opportunity to find total and complete healing in Christ.
Feeding Program: People from throughout the community gather for a nice meal and a chance to feel the warmth of someone who cares for them.
Homeless Ministry: Join a diverse team of local and international volunteers who go out on the streets weekly to minister to the homeless, addicted and displaced. This is the first step in the ladder of Ciudad Refugio’s recovery programs. An invitation is given to those who live on the streets to come and sleep in the Ciudad Refugio shelter.
Youth Development Program: Minister to the youth program which is a safe haven for at-risk youth where they can learn, grow and develop positive relationships with God, self and others.

Living Arrangements

You will stay at Ciudad de Refugio’s ministry site. Beds, sheets, and pillows are provided for each participant. The lodging site has 60 bunk beds. Men and women will be split up. There are plenty of showers and bathrooms, a large meeting room and other smaller meeting spaces as well.

Transportation

Fly into Medellin and we’ll pick you up at the airport. You’ll arrange your travel with your Missions Advisor about two months before your trip. All local transportation will be provided.

Cooking

You’ll eat like a local in Colombia!

Meals will be provided by our host and their local staff. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be served each day. Traditional Colombian cuisine may be served as well as some basic American foods. Food preferences unfortunately will not be able to be accommodated- only food allergies will be.

Safety

The safety of our participants is a top priority for us. We have both an internal Risk Management team and external Risk Management consultants. We use a multi-pronged approach to risk management – including monitoring information from reporting agencies and relying on the knowledge of our ministry partners. In addition to our own protocols (e.g., students must be with an adult at all times), our ministry hosts and partners will provide trip specific safety guidelines for the particular trip location. Our Project Leaders are trained in risk management and have access to both on-field and home-office support.

Registration and Payment

$500 Deposit: To reserve your trip, a $500 deposit is required. This deposit locks in your spot, and we’ll stay in touch to help you with all the preparations. The best part? This deposit goes toward the total cost of your trip.

50% Payment: Three months before your trip, half of the total cost will need to be paid.

100% Payment: The remaining balance is due two months before your trip.

Meet Your Project Leader

An adult Project Leader will be assigned to your team throughout the duration of your trip. They will stay with you and your team, as well as engage daily with you throughout ministry and daily life activities. This leader will have strong missions experience, leadership experience and a demonstrated competence in the area of discipleship of youth and young adults. In most cases, your project leader will help with facilitating ministry, meals and daily debrief and devotional time. Your Project Leader will be assigned to your trip and you’ll have the opportunity to have conversations with them during the weeks leading up to your trip.
