Today we visited the garbage dumps. We were warned before going there that the stench can be overwhelming and that in a prior group a girl had fallen to her knees and almost lost it.
It had been raining for a couple of days so the smell was subdued, but it was replaced with excessive amounts of mud. When we got there I was plagued with a mess of mixed emotions and thoughts. Are these not also beloved children of God? How it that I can be is so blessed with excessive amounts of comforts my entire life and there are people down here that are digging through rotten trash with hopes of finding food for their families? How did we even get to this point where human life isn’t given its proper value? It was while I was being overwhelmed by all of these thoughts and emotions that God reminded me of his presence. It was in the darkness and gloom of the garbage that hope shined through.
I had started a conversation with a woman there and while talking with her I found out that she brings meals to feed the people in the dump everyday without fail. She doesn’t live there, none of her family lives there, and yet she has chosen to love on these people in such a sacrificial way. It was in that moment that I was reminded of the truth that God’s light triumphs over the darkness every time. Light has a way of shining through and providing hope in a seemingly hopeless situation.
Romans 5: 1-5
“Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into his grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance, perseverance, character, and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured our his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us”
