The Adventures of Guat Girl – Episode 2: Our Mini Family

“Happy One Week Anniversary!!!”
That was the main theme of this past Monday. All seven of us “Guat Girls” took a moment to realize that we’d known each other for an entire week. And during that week, we had grown closer than most people will over years of friendship.
Already we had been through a lot as a team. We had left our homes, are families, and our ideas of normal behind to train for a few days in Georgia. When we finally met each other, we were the giggliest bunch of girls I’ve ever come across. By day 2 ½, we began to wonder if our giggling was starting to annoy other teams. We just never stopped laughing! It was incredible!
We sat in the airport on our cell phones, encouraging each other as we fought back tears, knowing that this was the last time some of us would hear our families’ voices for a while.
By the time we reached Guatemala, the inside jokes were flying thick ‘n’ heavy. Nicknames were already established, and personal space was obliterated. Everyone had a role that they fit perfectly. We were our own tribe long before we heard the locals calling us “gringos.”

We’ve learned that sweating is a constant activity.
We’re not too worried about impressing each other, so we’ve done away with make-up (almost) entirely.
We’ve managed to accommodate 7 shower schedules in one bathroom.
We have “fan time” in front of our Super Crown chrome fans every day.
We enjoy trying out new “missionary hairstyles” on each other.
And we really, really thrive when we’re serving each other.

I think what has blown me away about this group of six women is that while we are very, very different (one of the girls is from Texas… 'nuff said!) we are all pursuing the same things. Our hearts all long for a connection with the Lord that we know can only come from completely forsaking the lives we once led in order to rely only on Him. Our desire is to see the people of Guatemala freed from bondage to sin and darkness. And we are ready for whatever He would have us do in order to bring that to fruition.
Please pray for continued unity as we step out into the streets together. We begin ministry on Monday after having spent the past week preparing and acclimating to the area. Pray that we’ll continue to hold each other’s hands tightly as we pray… even when we’re sweating. And pray that we’ll be courageous in the midst of the darkness.
A cord of three isn’t easily broken. So what on earth has the strength to separate seven?
