Treasures amid the trash

On Monday, we went to the dump to talk to people, pray with them, and invite them to a program the following day.  The next morning we spent several hours preparing for the event: buying a piñata, cookies and juice for the kids, rice and beans for the families, a couple pairs of boots, collecting clothes, and planning the program. As we sat in the van, heading to the dump on Tuesday, we had absolutely no idea of what to expect. God worked in a huge way! Let me try to paint this picture for you.

As we pulled into the entrance of the dump, an hour late, crowds of children and families greeted us. Smiles crept onto the faces of many children and whispers of “gringas!” were heard. The crowds followed the van until we finally stopped. Our spirits were high and very excited as we stepped out of the van and explained what we were going to do.  We gathered the children in front of us and began to do many of the children’s songs we had learned during our time here. My heart was warm as I saw shy smiles break out and heard little voices singing along with us. It was a stark contrast to the piles of trash that served as our scenery, along with thousands of flies and less than desirable smells. We performed a drama and a Bible story as well. After the Bible story, Pastor Ronnie shared the gospel, and 10 or so children stepped forward to ‘open their hearts to Jesus’. What a beautiful thing!

And then, the much desired moment: the piñata. The buzz of excitement filled the air as different adults helped us hang the piñata in the tree. The joy and laughter and smiles were incredible. It is hard to describe that time, but know that it was amazing! After the piñata, we handed out the food, snacks, and clothes. This reminded us of the incredible need for basic necessities that each person there had. People swarmed us, desperate to get the little food and clothes we had to offer. But in the midst of this, God was answering prayers. He helped us find the 4 individuals for whom we had bought boots. We had the exact right amount of snacks for the kids, and the exact amount of rice and beans for the families. It didn’t rain while we were there and only started once we were all in the van and driving away. God is good.

That day, we were able to bring some hope and life into a hopeless place. The smiles and laughter that filled the air were treasures amid the trash. Although we couldn’t take away their needs permanently, God is our provider, their provider, and He will continue to care for each of them.
