I felt God call me to pray for a single mother and on the second day. I saw a mother walking in a store with her kid and felt God call me towards her. I was able to pray with her and her kid and while I was praying I felt God tell me to pay for her groceries!

Mission Trip Details

Meet the People of Appalachia

The Appalachian Mountains are worldly known for their natural beauty. Steep wooded hills, narrow valleys and winding streams, make the Appalachian mountains a beautiful natural wonder of the world.

Tucked into the side of the mountains is Morgantown, WV; a unique area that includes the mixture of university life (West Virginia University) with the hometown feeling. Endowed with abundant natural resources, many of the homegrown people fight daily for freedom from poverty and despair; living below the poverty line as compared to the national average. The struggles of drugs, alcohol and poor health are the daily battles they face. Their families are now being raised as a “culture of poverty,” which has led to jobless households, and poverty-stricken communities.

The people of Morgantown, WV come from a strong heritage of hard working coal miners, but years of discouragement have taken its toll on the people. Many of them work several jobs to make ends meet as well as Government Aid. They need to know there is hope for them for a better future.

Service Opportunities

Our partners have a variety of ministry programs in which your team will be able to engage.

They are all very influential in serving the “least of these.”

Elderly Care: Mostly helping with home repairs, cleaning, or projects around their houses. You could also visit a senior center where you will be able to play games, sing songs, or simply just have a conversation with some elderly people.
Recovery Program Ministry: Specializing in recovery programs for youth, families, and adults, one of our partners helps those recovering from alcohol or substance abuse learn to live their lives drug-free and alcohol free. They provide free programs and services through education, training, counseling and mentoring, to combat addictions. Your teams will have the opportunity to work at the youth center, thrift store and apartment complex. This could entail fellowshipping, sidewalk VBS, distributing clothes, landscaping, light construction, and prayer walks.
Homeless Ministry: There are several homeless shelters for men, women, and children who may be impoverished economically, educationally, emotionally and/or spiritually. Here, your team might do light construction, cleaning, organizing, or landscaping. This is also a great place to fellowship and share your faith.
Retail Store: Here your team might help by sorting clothes that are donated as well as furniture and merchandise. Cleaning, organizing, helping customers, and fellowshipping with each other and the people all around there.
VBS: You could have the opportunity to facilitate some kids camps or programs for the local community children.

Living Arrangements

Your team will be lodging in Morgantown, WV. There are separate male/female dormitories with 15 beds in each, which includes restroom and shower facilities. There is a functioning kitchen area, large dining room, and a recreation room. This building includes electricity and HVAC, but limited wifi service.

Transportation

Most of our teams choose to drive vans or a bus, which also provides transportation throughout the week.

Cooking

We have a full kitchen equipped with anything you might need. Preparing meals is a team effort, and we have a blast doing it together! Everyone will get a chance to help with meal prep and serving.

For breakfast, you’ll enjoy options like cold cereal, fruit, and bagels. If your group is up for it, we can also whip up some hot breakfasts.

Lunches will be packed with sandwiches, fruit, and a side to take along to the ministry site. After a day of serving, we’ll come together for a hot dinner, either at the church or during ministry events. Let’s make mealtime both delicious and fun!

Safety

Your safety is our top priority! We’ve got an internal Risk Management team and external consultants working together to ensure a safe experience. Our multi-pronged approach includes monitoring information from reporting agencies and leveraging the expertise of our ministry partners.

We have clear protocols in place, like ensuring students are always with an adult. Plus, our ministry hosts will share specific safety guidelines tailored to your trip location. Our Mission Leaders are trained in risk management and have access to both on-field and home-office support, ensuring you’re in good hands throughout your journey.

Registration and Payment

$500 Deposit: To reserve your trip, a $500 deposit is required. This deposit locks in your spot, and we’ll stay in touch to help you with all the preparations. The best part? This deposit goes toward the total cost of your trip.

Meet Your Mission Leader

We’re excited to introduce you to your dedicated Mission Leader! An experienced adult leader will be assigned to your team for the entire trip, staying with you and engaging in daily activities and ministry. With strong missions and leadership experience, along with a proven ability in youth and young adult discipleship, your Mission Leader is there to support and guide you.

They’ll help facilitate ministry efforts, assist with meal preparations, and lead daily debriefs and devotionals. You’ll also have the chance to connect with your Mission Leader in the weeks leading up to your trip, ensuring you’re well-prepared and excited for the journey ahead!

We’re excited to offer group trips that can be tailored to 5 or 7-day options. Here’s a sneak peek into a fulfilling 7-day adventure in Appalachia:

Saturday: Arrival and settling into your cozy cabins in Duffield, VA. Get ready for an amazing week ahead!

Sunday: Dive into light construction projects, helping with repairs and improvements in the community.

Monday: Spend the day at our vibrant thrift store, sorting donations, organizing merchandise, and connecting with the locals.

Tuesday: Enjoy a heartwarming day of elderly care, visiting senior centers, playing games, singing songs, and sharing conversations.

Wednesday: Get involved at the food pantry and children’s shelter, assisting with distribution and engaging with the kids.

Thursday: Focus on shelter ministry and sports ministry, offering support and spreading joy through physical activities.

Friday: Wrap up your trip and depart, taking with you unforgettable memories and experiences.
