This is my Awakening

Something I couldn’t comprehend, I would get more upset seeing the stray dogs roaming the streets and the baby kittens that were waiting to be adopted then I was for his people. Seriously?! I truly thought there was something wrong with me! Yes it saddens me to see how some people are forced ro live but I was trying to convince myself to be upset. It bothered me beyond belief that I wasn’t heartbroken over the sons and daughters of Christ. So I started pursuing the Lord and praying “God would you break my heart for what breaks yours”. On September 13 we went to a hospital right up the road...

Cancel the Amber Alert

This summer, Hannah Segers–a Passport participant to Thailand–was rocked to the bone and she walked the streets of Chang Mai seeing first hand the horrible epidemic of trafficking. She not only gained a passion to fight against it but saw a glimpse of it through the Lord's eyes. This is her story.   Searching, meaning, purpose.   These words have been playing on repeat in the tape deck of my mind the past 5 days to the point that the tape should just about be worn out. In the red light district of Chiang Mai I've seen this unending,...

Food Glorious Food

If you know me I’m sure you wondering why it took until my third post to talk about food. But I’m here now and that’s all that matters. We’ve been in Guatemala now for three weeks and had too many food adventures to recount. I will tell about some of the highlights of the trip so far. We cook for ourselves which has been interesting but really rewarding. In order to do this we shop at the outdoor market for fruits, veggies, meats, and eggs and in the supermarket for the rest. The market is an amazing maze of colors and smells. As we run through the narrow spaces in...

Introducing Venture Magazine

Yesterday, after almost a year of digging into this idea of living a good story, a group of our dedicated Storytellers launched something really special. Our Storytellers—all World Race alumni—spent many months together, collectively dreaming of a creating a place where well-lived stories could reside. The result of their efforts is Venture Magazine and they're so excited to invite you into it. You know what it’s like, how it feels. To be inspired. To create. To live a life worth living. It’s caught up in the little things, right?   It’s in jumping...

How a Packing Meltdown Made Me Ready to Race

Most people take an Adventures trip looking for change. But sometimes people feel the pressures of change even before they leave. Kaleigh Ward has not yet left for the World Race, and she’s feeling out of her comfort zone. In fact, she is only beginning to see what her true motives for missions are. I jumped off the scale, plugged the numbers into my calculator, and gave a shout of victory.   “35.8 pounds! My big bag only weighs 35.8 pounds!”    I danced a happy jig and proclaimed my joy in a Facebook status. Then, I looked down.   There,...

Let’s Talk About Sex, Baby.

The past few weeks we have been teaching students in their teens about the importance of abstinence before marriage. We teach at nine different schools through out the week which makes it slightly challenging to build relationships with individual students. We start each class by reading Genesis 1:27-28 which says: "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them, And God said to them 'Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the...

Celebrate Unsung Heroes

Celebrating Unsung Heroes Unsung hero n: a person who makes a substantive yet unrecognized contribution; a person whose bravery is unknown   Epoch 2013 honors the unsung heroes; the people who cross the boulevard or the world to serve where poverty, drought, HIV/AIDS, sex trafficking, homelessness, and fear reign. For these heroes, this is more than planting churches and discipling – this is life. And we want to give them a lot of money to continue doing what they do. This October, we're hosting presenters like Jon Acuff ("Quitter,"...

A New Normal.

We have only been in Antigua about a week, but some things have already become normal and routine. Here are a few things that we are used to already :   1. Having PB&J for lunch daily.   2. The three alarm clocks we don't have to set: squirrels dancing on our thin roof, the neighborhood rooster, and the church bells that ring every hour.   3. People peeing in the street. Yes, women too.    4. Nutso driving. Our host informed us "Cars are not your friends here." We are learning that statement is 100% accurate.    5. The pouring rain and...

What I Learned About Myself Through a Boy Named “Trouble”

Adventure. Community. Life Change. That's what Danielle Alig of our Swaziland Passport team experienced this summer. She signed up for Swaziland with a desire to love on orphans–underdogs. Much to her surprise, she not only encountered them but realized through one little boy that she too was an underdog in desperate need of a Savior. Here is her story. My heart fights for the underdog and against the big bad bully. My heart aches for the ones who are picked on or are generally ignored. Swaziland has hungry children everywhere you look. Throughout the country, we found...

Setting Fires for Souls

Being the USA, idol worship can seem outdated. Out on the field, however, it is a very real influence to natives and the missionaries working with them. The Shauls are a long term missionary family who have been preaching to the natives about serving God alone. After two weeks of working with the indigenous people, the people were ready to cast down their idols as a sign of visible transformation to serve Christ. HE made darkness his covering, HIS canopy around him, thick clouds dark with water.  Out of the brightness before HIM hailstones and coals of fire broke through HIS clouds....

Creepy Crawlers and Training Camp

Can I just say one thing?  The bugs in Georgia? No thank you. They are large and in charge. Wasps nests in the showers, spiders dropping down during worship, and the various winged ones flying every which way. Besides the pests, training camp has been such a blessing. Spending four days in Gainsville's woods was such a necessary time just to meet the team and prepare our hearts. Besides all the brilliant speakers we heard and tasty food we ate, there were a few activities. One that stood out for me was the surrender hike. Before the hike started we all wrote on pieces of paper...
