“Como nos ama Dios”

Well, I love Guatemala.   I love the people. I love the culture and the colors. I love the doors on every single home. I love the tiny convenient stores and cobblestone roads. I love the coffee and traditional, homemade Mayan outfits.                         I’m even in love with living with 18 other people and the packed “chicken buses” (However, I do miss my daddy, clean water, my own bathroom, and washing machines more than I ever imagined).   Today we went to a new church. It was all in Spanish and I...

Splashing Through Guatemala in Bedroom Slippers

Sometimes during my life I just stop for a second and ask myself, “What is my life?” I examine the crazy situations and then I assess it. Today I had one of those moments. I’m finally getting used to the crazy,  non-sensical driving that makes up Guatemala, so the hourish drive yesterday morning to a Mayan 7th-12th grade school was no big deal. We walked through a parade, finally learning not to respond to the vendors cries of “Special price for you my friend!” and into the high school. Up some stairs, through some hallways, and then I looked around and...

ask the Lord

We're halfway through week 2 in Antigua and we're still going strong! Today my small group was supposed to go volunteer at a daycare where the children of the market workers go. That fell through so instead we went into the square in Antigua and did some "Ask the Lord."  Heather W. and I broke off and walked around trying to see where the Lord would lead us. Hearing God speak to me is something I've been working on and praying for. I desperately want to hear His voice. So for a while I was feeling discouraged. We were having an amazing time talking to people...

Dirt, Stoves and Hard Work

PHOTOS For some reason, photos won't load on this blog. I'm uploading as many as possible to my flickr account, so check it out at the link above! I'm really struggling to find words to write this blog. This last week has been such a mix of emotions: excitement, frustration, happiness, sadness and pure joy.  Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of this week we all took off our "normal" ministries to help out another ministry. We spent the days hoeing and raking a field that will eventually be a community tomato farm to help families get out of the poverty cycle by...

Rescued from the Haiti Rubble

Denise Heesch and her team visited Merger, Haiti, on an Adventures Encounter trip. Below Denise tells the story of one family who experienced a miracle in the rubble of the 2010 earthquake. We followed single-file behind Madame Pastor and the translator as they explained we were going to meet a special young girl. When we reached a concrete slab at the top of a steep hill, we approached the door on the back of the cinder block “home.” The special young girl Meloonda had just woken up but the mother invited the six of us plus the translator inside to wait. While we waited, we...

Greetings from Guatemala!

We have officially finished our first week of Guatemala and I have absolutely loved it! Before we flew down to Guatemala, we spent four days at Training Camp on the Toccoa Falls Campus. We spent that time getting to know our team, learning about the culture we were about to live in, and drawing closer to God through worship and Bible studies. I have absolutely loved getting to know everybody on my team! I had no idea I could love and grow close to a group of people so quickly. The days we have spent in Guatemala have been incredible! We visited some of the ministries that we will be...

Beloved

So I've been with my team for a week and already I feel like a different person. The Lord has taught me so much about Himself and how much He loves His children.  The hardest thing I've done so far on the trip is definitely working at the hospital for adults and children with cerebral palsy. The first day we worked there we were invited to "pray" with the patients. We helped walk some of the adult women to the men's area where a catholic priest walked around touching their hands as they (or at least the people who were able to) responded to...

a hospital and a grandpa house

Day three in Guatemala was amazing! We began our day in a hospital in Antigua that cares for men, women, and children with cerebral palsy. We’d been there before with our Spanish-speaking contact, but today we went alone. So I was called on to translate during our entire tour of the hospital! I was both nervous and excited to take that on; thankfully I understood basically everything and was able to translate effectively!                 We turned a couple...

¡Bienvenidos a Guatemala!

01. Our first glimpse of Guatemala! // 02.The view from our front porch So. We’re in Antigua, safe and sound. We are staying in a house (with TWO bathrooms and a kitchen! Wooooo!) that our host Louis, his wife and twin girls have graciously allowed us to use for the next two months! They’re so great… we absolutely adore them! They’re our “mama y papa” for our time here and have welcomed us into their lives!   03. Our side porch // 04. Some really gorgeous flowers in our yard Yesterday was a really awesome day – we toured 3 of our 4 ministry...

But REALLY, What’s the Point of Being a Missionary?

As missionaries we often hear "Why, what's the point?" Is it for more passport stamps, to play with kids, to see the world? Or as we believe, is it to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and heal the sick? Passporter, Brittany Starr went through the same questioning, and you might be surprised at what she discovered. I get that question a lot, [why], but apart from God it's all just humanitarian aid. In the words of our contact Paul, "God is what makes missionaries different…" So, that being said, what is the point of being a missionary? To bring...

In Antigua!

Hello Everyone! Team Guatemala is safe and sound in the beautiful city of Guatemala! Our amazing contact Luis picked us up from the airport and has been showing us around our new home. We've been spending the afternoon settling in and getting to know out surroundings. We will soon be posting more blogs about our time here. 🙂 – Team Guatemala Leaders Roni and Mark 🙂

How I Found Jesus Dancing on Moldy Cardboard

Robin Brooks searched for Jesus for years in the comfort of small town America. It wasn't until she stepped into his world, amongst the hurting, dirty, and dying, that she could see him with clear eyes. It was there that Robin, in the weakness of her own heart, finally found him.  I spent six years looking for God. I looked for him in my high school. I searched for him on my college campus. I poured all my free time into ministries. I hopped on a plane and prayed that he would be in one of the 11 countries I’d visit during the World Race. I thought maybe if I served enough...
