The past two weeks have been a blur. We have done so many ministries, but also had a lot of free time. We have been to the special needs school, the nursing home, the park, the Children’s hospital, the garbage dump, the orphanage, and prostitute ministry. We have also gotten to go to lots of churches here and lead a few worship songs and share testimonies. We went to one church in the mountains and I was so encouraged by their joy for the Lord. They danced and laughed during their worship and were so welcoming to us! I love the joy people have here despite their circumstances. I am not the same person I was 4 weeks ago. Last week we also hiked through the rainforest to Las Escobas, where we swam in the cold water running off from the waterfalls. It was so refreshing after the long hike!
Lately I have been a little discouraged because I feel like I’m not making much of a visible difference here. But God has been teaching me that He can use even small acts of love to change someone’s life. I may not always see the results right away, but God has me here for a purpose and I have to trust that I am making a difference in someone’s life. Here are some examples of small things our team has done that I feel have made a difference for someone here: We prayed for a baby from the orphanage who was very sick in Guatemala city and needed surgery about two weeks ago. Then yesterday at the orphanage, we saw him! He had gotten cleft lip repaired and seemed happy and healthy. Also, 2 children accepted Christ at the dump this week. We brought coloring books and crayons to the Children’s hospital and cheered up some sick kids this week as well. I’m definitely learning to just trust that God is using what I’m doing here for His glory.
I can’t believe we are already halfway through this trip! It has gone by so fast. I am trying to make the most of every opportunity we have; I don’t want to waste any of the precious time I have left here. I am looking forward to the next month we have left! Please continue to keep our team and the people we meet in your prayers.
Here’s a list of things I love about Guatemala:
Tiky (a deliciously sugary pineapple soda)
Pitbull music playing everywhere!
Palm trees with real coconuts on them
Hibiscus flowers
Thunderstorms
Sweet children who run up and hug us
Doing my laundry outside and hanging my clothes on a line
The mountains
The ocean breeze that feels like God’s breath on us
“The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon me, for the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted and to proclaim that captives will be released and prisoners will be freed.” Isaiah 61:1
