God is Here !

The rain is pouring down. Pelting the roof so hard everything else has been drowned out. Something about the rain gives me inexplicable joy. I've been struggling with the fact that the ways I normally encounter God aren't doable here. I can't go running on the beach with the puppy or get lost in some great country music as I cook away in the kitchen. God gave me my unique passions and in the moments when I am doing those things that I love, God meets me there.  I am learning that although it is so much easier to find God in the places he normally meets me, it is so much...

Our God is a Father

I have always had a good relationship with my dad, but I had been holding things back from him. Something we forget is that our God is our Father. A Father that loves us no matter how many times we mess up, a Father whose yes is yes and no is no, a Father that will lead us to walk as His Son walked. I picture a 5 year old putting on his Dad's shoes, there is no way he can fill them, but the child's imagination fills the Dad's shoes anyway. God knows that His shoes are way too big to fill, but He had a Son that filled those shoes for us. Now, all we need to do is lace up the...

A Forgotten Gift

1 Corinthians 2:5  "so that faith might not rest on men's wisdom, but on God's power." This verse hit me like a brick in the head, and could possibly be my new favorite. First of all, the more clear message of this verse is for us to rest our faith on God, and not on any wisdom made of man. It is very easy for us as Christians to look to other, spiritually mature Christians and do the things they do, to think the way they do, to follow their lead, to rest our faith in finding comfort in them. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm all about iron sharpening iron. But...

Nazareth (Pt. 1)

This is the story of how I met this dear little one.     It was late morning during our first week in El Casa Verde.  Most of our team was lounging around a table by thedoor when we heard a knock.  The door was openedand in walked a man, his wife, and little girl.  They were introduced to us as a Pastor and his family, come from the Capitol to visit.    The morning passed and the arrival of the family passed from memory.  The noontime meal rolled around, and after filling my plate with frijoles y juevos I found myself walking the long way...

Lust of the World

I can’t explain how much I LOVE the beautiful city of Puerto Barrios. Everything is green and the streets are full of life. Coming from my small little farm town and seeing so many people is raddling my mind. So as many of you readers out there know I ‘am a TALL white female. When I say tall, I mean 6 foot tall and EXTREMLY white. All I can think when I step out onto the streets is that I ‘am a tourist attraction here. Men on the streets stare, point, whistle, and practice their best English trying to impress us American ladies. Today showed me how much women are treated...

Sometimes I Hate Meeting People

There is a thing I am entertaining about God.  It involves him giving me the challenge to do things I hate.  Then he sits back and smiles in knowing mirth when I grudgingly admit "I actually like this… I think I may end up loving it." Of course I say it under my breath, which makes a Father really laugh. ……..    I grow nervous approaching people for the first time.  I suspect most people get a bit fidgety at first contact with an unknown soul.  For some of us it has been, or still is, a crippling thing at times.  The fear...

Five Ways You Can Help Northern Georgia Recover From The Storms

At Adventures in Missions, we call Northern Georgia our home. Yesterday, many of our neighbors lost their homes, and our community was torn apart by a string of severe thunderstorms and tornados. We are working now with local authorities and churches to determine the most strategic use of our teams in the affected areas.   As we identify the areas where we can serve our neighbors, we want to hear from you. Tell us where, when, and how you can be a part of our team by filling out this form. We will contact you soon to share how you can get involved. You can join our team: Stay...

My God is Greater

As I write this I can’t believe we have only been in Guatemala just over a week. There has been so many changes to my heart, how I view things, and my expectations to how the culture and ministry was going to be like. I am just now beginning to realize how deep and how sweet the love of God is. Though I have known about it, I am now starting to embrace and experience His everlasting love and favor. In the past week or so I am learning that I have controlled many areas in my life instead of letting God permeate my heart with His. I have held on to pain, past hurts, sin, pride, worry,...

Following Jesus: Moment or Marathon?

Kory Markel is currently on our nine-month, college-age trip, Passport Immersion. Kory and his team are wrapping up month six after spending three months each in Nicaragua and the Philippines. Next, they're heading to Kenya for their final three months of their Passport journey.  Do you remember the instant you decided to follow Jesus? Often times we think of the decision to follow Jesus as a turning point in our lives. Whether it was a moment on a Thursday night at summer camp, a hand raised in church or praying the sinners' prayer, there is an initial...

Coffee and the Word

It's been a few days over a week since coming to Guatemala and to say its been eventful would be an understatement. Everyone on the team has now seen and experienced things so new that often times we all don't know what to say.   When I sit back and think that we all have just begun this journey my mind can become so overwhelmed pondering what unexpected thing will be thrown at us next. I think this is where I'm finding God is teaching me the most, He's teaching me to be grounded in prayer. The first Sunday here our ministry leaders Paul and Hilda filled us...
